Otto von Kotzebue

Otto von Kotzebue (born 1936 in Munich – died 2022 in Munich) was a German architect and painter. He is the great-grandson of Alexander von Kotzebue (German-Russian battle-painter of the Romantic period) and Great-great-grandson of the playwright August von Kotzebue.

After cancelling high school, Kotzebue became a bricklayer and then studied architecture at the college in Munich. Afterwards, he worked as a freelance architect for architectural offices in Munich, Athens, Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, Sao Paulo and Johannesburg until 1980. From 1980 onwards, he devoted himself entirely to painting. Since the 1990s, Otto von Kotzebue lived and worked as a painter in his studio behind the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.

Like his great-granduncle, who was also named Otto von Kotzebue and who took part in three great world journeys, Otto von Kotzebue traveled the world and kept his travel impressions on often large-format screens.

Axel Bunt

Axel Bunt was born in Berlin and completed his schooling in Pankow. He then began an apprenticeship as an aircraft mechanic and worked in this profession. He subsequently worked in various fields: flight attendant, check-in assistant and taxi driver.
He obtained his high school diploma through adult education and completed a degree in art education at Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald, where he developed his own style (relief painting).
Axel Bunt breaks new ground with his painting because when you look at his works, you don’t know where the painting ends and the object begins. Coupled with expressive colours, his layers of material create relief-like, sometimes surreal scenes.
His early works are expressive cityscapes, carved in wood and then partially painted over. In a series of portraits, he gradually moves away from two-dimensionality and begins to layer different materials, giving his paintings an object-like character. Axel Bunt is currently working on a series combining animal, group and female portraits.

Maria Dierker graduated in 2000 with a diploma. Subsequently, she was a master student of Professor Dr. Qi Yang. Since then she has been to Southeast Asia (People’s Republic of China, South Korea), Africa (including Gambia, Kenya, Senegal, Sudan), Europe (alongside Germany including Azerbaijan, Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Malta) with study visits, artist exchanges, projects and exhibitions , Netherlands, Poland, Romania). She also took part in renowned advanced training courses in Zen calligraphy and Far Eastern painting with internationally known masters. In addition to painting, installations shape her artistic work. Maria Dierker is also a “Sevengardens Dialoger” and thus a recognized representative of this official measure of the UN Decade “Education for Sustainable Development”. In addition, she works as a lecturer in adult education.

Natalia Simonenko

Natalia Simonenko was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. After graduating from the Central Youth Art School of the St. Petersburg region in 1985, she graduated from the F. Gertsen Pedagogical Institute of Graphic Arts in 1992 and obtained a diploma from the I.E. Repin Art Academy in 1999. In 2001 she was admitted to the Association of Russian Artists.
Her solo exhibitions at the Russian House in Berlin in 2002 took her to Germany. Since her marriage in 2011, she has been commuting between St. Petersburg and Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg.

“When I walk through nature with my eyes open, I see a lot of beauty and often discover special shapes and forms in the growth of the trees, in the roots or in the weave of the branches.”

With these words, Christa Schumacher opens the door to her artistic work and invites us to look at the world through her eyes. What appears inconspicuous to many – the structure of a root, the filigree pattern of a petal or the curve of a branch – becomes the source of inspiration for Christa Schumacher’s art. Her works reflect this intense connection with nature; they are homages to the hidden, which on closer inspection suddenly reveal unexpected beauty and depth.

We are very pleased to introduce you to the Korean artist Hyeja Kim.

Hyeja Kim is internationally renowned for her large-scale oil on canvas works, which often depict urban scenes at night, characterised by the lights and their reflections. Her paintings combine real and imaginary elements, creating a unique visual experience that transports the viewer into a dreamlike world.

The art critic Ban Yijeong, who has analysed Kim’s works in detail, writes: “Hyeja Kim’s paintings are fascinatingly similar to the structure of Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ in that they combine different time planes and spaces. Kim’s cities often do not exist in reality, but are a fusion of memory and imagination.” These subjective cityscapes reflect not only physical reality, but also the emotional and psychological layers associated with urban life.

The title of the exhibition “Trans_Reflection #3” is more than just a description. It alludes to the concept of ‘trans-reflection’, a term Ban Yijeong explains as follows: “This new word may mean combining multiple screens (trans) beyond the long-standing attributes of a photo or painting that reflects only one scene (reflection), but it can also mean going beyond the grammar of conventional painting that reflects/reproduces something.” Kim’s works thus go beyond mere depiction and open up new possibilities of perception and interpretation.

It is a great pleasure for us to present to you Georgian art, represented by the priest Andria Natsvlishvili, Makrine Tkebuchava, Mikheil Makharadze and Natia Beqauri! Many thanks also go to the organisation Georgian Art House, represented by Levan Telia, without whom this exhibition would not have been possible. On display are very different art styles, but all of them represent the essence of Georgian culture and offer visitors an insight into this beautiful and culturally rich country.

Makrine is an artist from Tbilisi, Georgia. She graduated from Chernyshevsky University in 2002 with a degree in foreign languages.

In 2015, she completed a masterclass in graphic art with David Koiava and Marina Gakhutashvili. After that, Makrine took part in various events, charity events and exhibitions where she gave away her paintings.

The first charity event she took part in was an auction “against the occupation” organised by the Guivy Zaldastanishvili School in Tbilisi. Later, Makrine came to the United States for the AFG Spring Cocktail Reception. She participated in two art exhibitions in New York City, which took place on 5 May and 26 September 2019.

She is a member of the Georgian Artists Guild Club. Makrine participated in an exhibition entitled “Stay in the Studio” on 23 August 2020, which was supported by the United Nations in Georgia. On 21 September 2020, Makrine took part in an exhibition of the Georgian Artists Guild Club in Paris at the Corrado Bortone Gallery, which also featured works by French and Italian painters.

Makrine took part in an artistic exchange project between Georgia and Austria organised by the Georgian Artist Guild Club in the city of Krems, Austria, on 2 October 2020 at Galerie Daliko. This project was part of the visual arts festival “4 Seasons of the Year – Palette of Friendship”.

On 23 March 2021, Makrine took part in the Paris exhibition “En ligne action des femmes – la beauté du printemps”.

Natia Beqauri

Natia Beqauri is an artist working in Georgia and a master of Tikruli enamelling. She has been working with enamel for 15 years. From 2008 to 2010 she worked in the workshop “Fokan” with Mr Davit Kakabadze. In 2016 and 2017 she took part in Expo Georgia in Tbilisi together with Georgian artists. Since 2009 she cooperates with the gallery “Ornament”.

In 2018-2019 she had three exhibitions in America. These exhibitions took place under the direction of Marita Damenia.

In 2023 she became a member of the cultural association “la via dell’ arte” in Italy. The exhibition took place in the town of Montereso Almo in Sicily.

Mikheil Makharadze was born on 12 July 1994. He graduated from St Tbel Abuserisdze High School in 2012 and studied philosophy at the State University of Shota Rustaveli in Batumi from 2012 to 2018.

“The main theme of my work is the human being and everything related to humanity. For me, man is the highest value, it is he who gives meaning and value to the given world. In art, I explore emotions and ideas, the symbolic world around us that we ourselves create.

The direction is symbolic in content, but the style of the visual narrative is close to surrealism. All works are made on canvas and acrylic…”

Priest Andria Natsvlishvili

Andria Natsvlishvili was born on 28 April 1955 and began painting at a young age. at the Moscow Art Institute (1980-84), long before he turned to the church. In 2002, he decided to enter religious life. In 2011, his old passion finally caught up with him; he took up the brush again and held his first personal exhibition in Georgia in 2013 at the Centre for Spiritual and Intellectual Development of Youth of the Patriarchate of Georgia. The exhibition was dedicated to the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Blessed Ilia II. He has also been exhibiting regularly since 2013, primarily in his home country.

In Germany, visitors had the opportunity to see the artist’s works at the Berlin gallery ARS PRO DONO from 1 March to 25 April 2021 with the exhibition “Strange Worlds”. It was a series of oil paintings.

A distinct individual style is recognisable in each work; one can assume references to the Renaissance and Mannerism from Giuseppe Arcimboldo to Hieronymus Bosch, but also a connection to Surrealism, which is particularly evident in the magical atmosphere of dreams, even if the impetus is different.

The flowing, shimmering quality that can be achieved with oil colours, reminiscent of oil paintings on puddles, is perhaps more than just a pictorial medium. Some of the works initially appear to be veritable swirls of colour which, on closer inspection, reveal more and more details, sometimes organic, sometimes technical-looking structures. Deliberately chosen symbolic content or a dreamlike flow of inspiration? Discover the charm of strange worlds…

We are delighted to be able to show works by the artist Victor Shtivelberg again in our gallery with the new exhibition AugenBlicke, which last delighted the public in 2019 in the exhibition Watching and Listening.

At the same time, we would also like to take this opportunity to announce that Galerie Paqué will from now on permanently represent works by Victor Shtivelberg, kindly provided to us by Ninelle Shtivelberg!

The painter from the Ukraine (*1960 in Odessa) with Jewish roots studied at the Odessa Art School and has been working as a freelance painter since 1987. Elements of symbolism, surrealism and a reference to realism can be found in his works, but Victor Shtivelberg vehemently rejects any categorization of his art. What is certain is that the artist draws his imagery from the subconscious or his inner world, which he tries to depict as clearly as possible. The motifs of his art come from Jewish mysticism, which is interwoven with Christian and Zen Buddhist elements. Technically, the artist mainly uses oil painting, but his repertoire also includes gouaches, pastels, graphics and acrylic paintings. The focus is on the masterful handling of composition, form, color and material.

The title of this exhibition comes from the gallery owner and ex-wife of the artist, Ninelle Shtivelberg, who addresses the following words to the public:

“I thought about it; just as pearls or stones are strung together on a string to form a necklace, a beautiful piece of jewelry, our lives consist of a series of many “Augenblicke”, moments – snapshots. And here we have the good fortune that someone in this room has captured such moments. Victor Shtivelberg captures moments. And you can see that every moment, every instant is very important. Nothing happens by chance, nothing is really chaotic or meaningless. This exhibition is an invitation for you to stop and enjoy the moment. I am very grateful to be able to share these moments with you. Just as the pearls form a chain, moments form the chain of our lives. And so pictures of life form this exhibition.”

The exhibition will once again kick off with a concert, this time presented by pianist Nina Gurol, who is celebrating her solo debut in our gallery and music studio. The program includes works by Domenico Scarlatti, Robert Schumann, Leoš Janáček, Emilie Mayer and Franz Schubert. Further information and registration for the concert can be found here.

Victor Shtivelberg

Victor Shtivelberg was born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1960. There he graduated from the Odessa Art School. Since 1987 he has participated in over 30 solo exhibitions and more than 60 group exhibitions in many countries. His paintings are exhibited in museums and can be found in numerous private collections worldwide. In 1991 he became a member of the International Art Association.

Although Victor Shtivelberg’s works are based on realism, it is the mysticism of his inner world that brings his paintings to life. They cast a unique spell over the viewer in a wonderful way. Symbols from different cultures are interwoven, speak their own language and tell stories that are neither realistic nor surrealistic. Over the years, Victor has developed a brilliant, mature and very individual color palette, which he uses with great sensitivity.

Dear friends of art,

It is a great pleasure for us to present you Ukrainian artist Alina Khrapchynska with her exhibition Світи – Worlds. A native of Kharkiv, she began her education in childhood at the Children’s Art School named after Ilya Yefimovich Repin (Russian/Ukrainian artist). Later she attended the Kharkiv State Art School (specializing in “Artist Designer”), followed by a master’s degree program at the Faculty of Art and Graphic Arts of the H.S. Skovoroda National Pedagogical University of Kharkiv (named after the Ukrainian artist, poet and philosopher).

In the tradition of the Kharkiv School of Art, Khrapchynska seeks the aesthetic paradigm in the (neo)baroque variability of the pictorial world, through which she creates new painterly impulses. This pictorial world is defined by the reflection of the microcosm in the macrocosm and vice versa, carried by an inner harmony that connects these worlds into a whole. Technically, her painting is based on the traditions of realism and modernism, while the motifs of her works stand out for a plastic sensitivity, painterly expression, decorativeness and genre diversity.

Alina Khrapchynska is a member of the Kharkiv organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine as well as a member of the Federal Union of Visual Artists (BBK Cologne).

The musical prelude will be provided by the two musicians Veronika Mushkina (guitar) and Franziska Jaschke (flute) with works by J. Ibert, C.P.E. Bach, A. Piazzolla, M. Ravel, B. Bartók, J.-M. Damase and C. Machado. More information and registration for the concert can be found here.

About the association:

• Democratic Movement: We support the inclusion of a free Ukraine in European alliances.
• High-achiever education: We award scholarships to talented students in Rohatyn and facilitate study trips to Germany to teach Western democratic values.
• Humanitarian aid: For more than 20 years we have been collecting relief supplies and donations to build up infrastructure in the health and education sectors. In particular, we provide food for orphans at the Rohatyn Lyceum.
• Aid for war victims: Our current priority is to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe for children in Ukraine, who have been particularly hard hit by Russia’s war of aggression, which violates international law.

Dear friends of art,

It is our great honor to present you the painter Giovanni Pelliccioli (1947-2016) with the exhibition Beyond the Realms of Thought.

As a representative of Surrealism, Pelliccioli successfully exhibited his works throughout Europe and the USA. Raised in simple circumstances, but a loving home, he developed his passion for art in his early childhood. During the first years, and while attending the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques and ideas. He turned to oil painting at the age of 17 and after a brief impressionistic period discovered Surrealism: he had found his calling.

Pelliccioli’s work continued to evolve and is often categorized into three main periods. The 1° surrealistic period was characterized by paintings whose subjects were mostly inspired by surrealistic painters such as Magritte, Salvador Dalì, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy… The paintings of the 2° surrealistic period introduce the first signs of Giovanni Pelliccioli’s own Surrealism, when he gave birth to new spiritual conceptions and new symbolic object leitmotivs. With his 3° surrealistic period, the artist introduced a few innovative ways of expression. In fact, it’s the most creative period of his career, irony being the main theme. This is also the time when the artist started to use new materials, such as wood, metal, glass and other natural objects (leaf skeletons, stones) which gave to his works a new sculptural dimension. The « trompe-l’œil » effect also becomes a recurring game. When he moved to Antibes (French Riviera) in 1993, Pelliccioli created the “triangle”: a diagonally cut painting with three-dimensional character. A prolific painter, Pelliccioli completed over 2000 oil paintings.

For this exhibition, a selection of over 40 paintings has been assembled, offering a broad overview of his artistic work. We are looking forward to welcoming you and inviting you to a journey into a world between dream and reality.

The exhibition can be visited until 15.07.2023 always on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 14:00 and 18:00.

We are also delighted to welcome again the pianist and daughter of the artist Ida Pelliccioli in our gallery. For the exhibition opening she has prepared an exciting program titled “Introspections” with works by J. Sibelius, J. Brahms. F. Busoni, L. Janáček and S. Rachmaninov. Giovanni Pelliccioli

Giovanni Pelliccioli was born in San Pellegrino Terme (Italy). He starts drawing at 10, and soon after, starts painting – still life and landscapes. At 18, he attends the Art School of the Academy Carrara in Bergamo. At 21 he discovers surrealism, a style he’ll never give up, and begins his professional career.

During his life, he presented about 120 personal exhibitions in Europe. He is a registered artist in the major museums in the world.

“It is impossible, perhaps even blasphemous to comment an artwork. Only the eyes and a certain mental attitude can allow us to be placed in front of a canvas. The word is not only arbitrary, but insulting and ridiculous, and it always risks to overlap what the canvas can express. As always, my engagement is to create poetry with a touch of irony, to cause a positive emotion and cheer the spirits. The fantastic, the dream, the sense of not logical, are simply a free interpretation of our being.”
